Is Cyanuric Acid the Same as Chlorine Stabilizer?

Yes—cyanuric acid (CYA) is the same thing as chlorine stabilizer. They’re just two names for the same chemical, and both are used to help chlorine last longer in your pool.

When chlorine is exposed to sunlight, it can break down very quickly—sometimes in just a few hours. Cyanuric acid slows that process down, making your chlorine more effective for a longer period of time. That’s why CYA is commonly added to outdoor pools, especially during the warmer months.
You’ll often find stabilizer already included in chlorine products like trichlor tablets or dichlor shock. These are called stabilized chlorines. Over time, however, using these products can cause CYA levels to rise too high, which leads to something called chlorine lock—a situation where chlorine is in the water, but it’s not working properly.
If your cyanuric acid level is over 50 ppm, you might already be experiencing problems like cloudy water, algae, or weak chlorine performance.
The good news? You don’t need to drain your pool to fix it.
Try BIO-ACTIVE Cyanuric Acid Reducer (8 oz)—a natural, safe way to lower high stabilizer levels without draining. It:
Works with advanced biocatalyst technology
Is nontoxic, nonallergenic, and nonpolluting
Helps eliminate chlorine lock
Is made in the USA
